Missed Opportunity
On Wednesday, May 8th, members received tax receipts from the co-op for housing charges paid during the past year. The deadline for submissions such as this was February 28th and the deadline for filing one's taxes was April 30th. The deadline for paying housing charges though, remains the same - on time, every time.
I wonder what prompted this show of office expertise?

Actually the Feb. 28th deadline is only for issuing information slips such as T4s, (inc. CPP/OAS), T5s, ones for ODSP and OW, RRSP contributions etc.
ReplyDeleteThe April 30th deadline only matters if you owe money --- of course, you want to do the return before then so you'll know.
Low-income earners, OSDP and OW recipients used to need rent receipts if they went to get cash-back on their refunds. But since last year when they rolled all tax credits into the useless Trillium benefit, we don't get tax refunds. But people in those situations should know that they shouldn't dawdle unnecessarily about filing. Otherwise, their new July GST rebate might get delayed.
Rent receipts (like some others) don't have to be filed with your return --- assuming they haven't recently changed decades-old practice. However, if they ask for them later as part of a review, you'll need them.

This is the first time members have received housing charge receipts in this co-op - mass distributed, that is. It conveys to members, even if the timing is off, just how organized and precise our PM is - invaluable if you will. This is in contrast to the purposely skewed housing charges we purportedly paid to the co-op, and passed on to the co-op's lawyer. It's how they play the game.
