CRACKDOWN
A notice was delivered to members on October 21, 2013 informing us that a pest control technician will be entering all units to look for signs of cockroaches, bed bugs, etc., and rodents.
The person will be inspecting all drawers and cupboards throughout the units, as well as looking "under mattress covers, on bed posts and in the basement".
The first units were to be inspected on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 - one day after receiving this notice. The notice stated that this was 'sufficient' notice - if the members are not home, the co-op will be entering the unit - to go through all one's stuff.
Aside from being extremely intrusive, the technician could very well transfer bugs from one unit to another. All dogs and cats must be on their very best behaviour to allow this 'guest' into their homes.

What does by-law say? 24 or 48 hrs?
ReplyDeleteOr are they claiming an "emergency?"
The by-law states 48 hrs. The Co-op could enter a unit in an emergency situation. This is not an emergency situation. The technician is doing a cursory inspection of some units and overturning mattresses and delving into personal items in others. It seems as though the technician has received instructions from the office as to whose unit should be upturned. This is an exercise in pure power and control - not about bugs.
DeleteThe message from the office is if they can't get into your unit, they will get a locksmith to change your locks and YOU will be charged.
The eradication of insects, vermin and pestilance should be started first in the Project Boardroom and Corporate Office! that may bring some harmony to the Co-op !
