Grounded!

Yesterday, I notified the co-op that our son had moved out of our home. In October and November, 2011 I emailed our Property Manager asking for a stairlift funded by CMHC's Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP). I again emailed her twice in January asking for an update. Being a tad frustrated I contacted CMHC and asked for an application for a similar program - Home Adaptations For Seniors' Independence (HASI).

Today, I finally heard back from our Property Manager. She stated that because my husband and I are subsidized, that we would not qualify for the RRAP program. She also stated that she asked the woman at CMHC where she could find this clause in writing; the woman stated that it wasn't on the web site, but that our application would be returned with the reason for the denial. Is it a co-incidence that the day after I notified the co-op that our son had moved out, i.e. that we are presently overhoused, that we could not possibly qualify for a modification, or is this really a CMHC policy?

The Property Manager has placed us on a waiting list for an accessible unit. This is completely useless to me as it could be years before a unit becomes available, in addition to which I could not possibly move with my feet in this condition.

I cannot be expected to sleep on our sofa for months on end, never be able to take a shower or to be independent in any way. So what would our alternatives be? We could rent a stairlift, which would cost $1,000. for 3 months, and $150. per week thereafter, which expense should be paid for by the co-op. If I don't get a stairlift, I will have to go into a residential rehab hospital for several months and my husband will have to be placed in residential care, as I am his caregiver. Not only will the cost to the government be enormous, but it will prove to be the most discriminatory grant program ever devised and I will publicize it as so.

I am in the midst of investigating to find out whether CMHC's RRAP or HASI programs disqualify people who receive housing subsidies, or if it's the co-op that is preventing me from getting a stairlift.

Here's a link to the type of operation I will be having:
